Ridgeside Luminaries

Ridgeside's traditional luminaries are usually placed along the streets the Monday and Tuesday before Christmas. Residents place white paper bags containng candles approximately 15 feet apart, down both sides of the streets. The candles are lit at twilight, about 6:00 and burn until 9:00. Sand for anchoring the candles is provided by the Community Club. The sand keeps the candles in place and prevents the sacks from blowing over. Sand is usually placed at the pool parking area for residents to pick up. Inventive folks use bricks with holes as candleholders. All Ridgeside residents cooperate in carrying on the long tradition. In case of rain or snow on the day of the lighting, the event is cancelled. On nights of lighting, no cars are parked on the streets, and a neighborhood open house is held on the Monday night of the annual luminaries.
